Seminars

CDA and the Leonardo partners provide PQ seminars and in-house CPD.

In-house CPD Events
To request a CPD event please contact Copper Development Association (for generic presentations) or Partners directly.

Forthcoming Events
Details of seminars will be posted here.

Below is a series of presentations from previous Power Quality seminars. These are also available in the PQ_E-library, a downloadable, searchable and updateable technical reference source which includes presentations, webcasts and Application Notes.

Partners' Presentations

Power Quality and Voltage Disturbances download PowerPoint
- Stephanie Horton, ERA Technology

The structure of the electricity system, why failures occur and what performance can be expected - what will it be like in the future? Standard EN50160 defines voltage quality in public supplies. What does it achieve and where does it fail? The voltage stability of the network will be discussed in relation to the requirements of the equipment that it supplies. The compatibility gap between equipment and network will be examined and generic solutions discussed.

Measurements for Power Quality download PowerPoint
- Ken West, Fluke

The range of power quality measurements, including thermal imaging, will be described. The range of power measurement instruments available will be presented with emphasis on correct measurement techniques, instrument selection, safety in measurements and diagnostics. The value of long term logging as a diagnostic method will be discussed.

PQ and Energy Surveys download PowerPoint
- Steve Robinson, PEML

This presentation will focus on practical power measurement examples using the results of survey work. Survey planning and management will be discussed. Typical waveforms and event recordings, illustrating the issues will be presented.

Voltage Quality: Flicker download PowerPoint
- John Outram, Outram Research

An introduction to the regulatory background, the causes of flicker, how it is measured and various solutions in use for flicker mitigation around the world will be presented together with a look at the current thinking on the subject.

Standards for measurement instruments download PowerPoint
- Ian Murdoch, IMH

The standards for PQ measurement instruments will be discussed and compared.

Power Factor Correction and Passive Harmonic Filters download PowerPoint
- Paul Mainey and Jim Bridgeman, PFC Engineering

The cost of reactive power, supplier tariffs and cost/benefit analysis for power factor correction will be discussed. Practical aspects of power factor correction and harmonic filtering will be presented, including the relative advantages and disadvantages of passive and active filters, connection topologies and economics.

Resilient Power Supplies download PowerPoint
- Leo Craig, Riello

The options for backup power supplies will be discussed and compared. The relative advantages and areas of application of the various types will be explained. This presentation will look at the options for voltage disturbance mitigation, such as UPS, DVRs, voltage regulators, etc.

UPS Systems and Harmonic Conditioners download PowerPoint
- Shri Karve, MGE

The technology and topologies used in UPS systems will be presented and their relative advantages and efficiencies compared. Methods of achieving high availability supplies will be discussed. The principles of harmonic mitigation will be discussed including passive and active filtering and vector cancellation techniques.
