Cogeneration

Author: Rob Smit, KEMA Consulting

This Application Note introduces the concept of cogeneration: what it is and why and how it is used. Cogeneration is the simultaneous production of electricity and heat and is also refereed to Combined Heat and Power (CHP). The many different cogeneration technologies currently in use and those that are likely to enter use in the near future are discussed. Matching the twin outputs of cogeneration capacity to the twin energy demands of the application, necessary to achieve good environmental performance and economic operation is discussed. The final section of the Note discusses policy and regulatory issues. In the EU member states, cogeneration is used for about 10 per cent of all electricity production. The European Commission, which wants this percentage to increase to realise the potential environmental and security-of-supply benefits, has framed a number of directives that support cogeneration.
