11.1.10	Irish Hospital First to Harness Copper Technology to Fight Infections An Irish hospital is the first in the world to embrace the latest science by specifying hygienic copper door handles throughout in a bid to reduce healthcare associated infections such as MRSA, providing the best possible solid protection to its patients.

6.10.09	Copperindesign.org: Copper has designs on the Internet The European Copper Institute (ECI) has put a new website online dedicated to copper design: www.copperdesign.org. A meetingplace for contemporary designers and their followers, this international platform provides a comprehensive source of information on the crafting of the red metal: copper creations, first-hand accounts from designers, exhibitions, competitions, etc.
29.09.09	Architectural awards winners announced Winners of the European Copper in Architecture Awards 14 were announced at a presentation ceremony in London on 29th September. With almost 50 entries from 16 countries, the Awards revealed an exceptional diversity of projects representing the very best in contemporary European architecture.
14.9.09	New research compares antimicrobial efficacy of copper and silver Silver and copper have been used for their antimicrobial properties for centuries. Now, manufacturers are incorporating these metals into healthcare, food industry and even some consumer products, and making antimicrobial claims. In particular, there are several companies that create silver-ion coatings that can be applied to various surfaces, from work surfaces to door handles, which are then marketed as antimicrobial; some products claim to be effective against MRSA, a potentially deadly hospital-acquired infection. A study published in the most recent issue of Letters in Applied Microbiology answers the question of whether these applications work under real-life conditions.

22.7.2009	British Scientist Shares Expertise on Swine Flu Control in Beijing While British schoolchildren infected with swine flu were being quarantined in a local hospital, UK microbiologist, Professor Bill Keevil, shared his expertise in the control of influenza virus A (H1N1) with leading scientists from around the globe at the World Summit of Anitvirals in Beijing. Professor Keevil’s research shows that copper actively inhibits influenza A (H1N1) indicating a role for hard surfaces such as door handles to be made from copper and brass (copper combined with zinc) to help prevent the spread of infection. 30.6.2009	European copper projects shortlisted With almost 50 entries from 16 countries, the 2009 Copper in Architecture Awards revealed an exceptional diversity of projects – many not yet published – representing the very best in contemporary European architecture. Five quite different buildings – a media centre, museum, urban housing complex and two individual homes – have now been shortlisted by the international team of architect and editor judges.

23.2.2009	2008 'Copper and the Home' International Award After the success of the first competition in 2007, The Italian Copper Institute has announced the winners of the second ‘Copper and the Home’ international award, given to the best idea and design for objects made of copper and its alloys.
28.1.2009	Capillary and Compression Jointing and Pipe Sizing Resources The UK Copper Board has produced three new webcasts aimed at providing easy-to-digest training for installers and student plumbers. Two describe the jointing of copper tube using capillary and compression fittings. They take a step-by-step approach, explaining the do’s and don’ts, as well as featuring video clips showing jointing in action.
3.12.2008	First World Congress 'Copper and Public Health' The first global congress on copper’s role in fighting hospital-acquired infections took place in a central Athens hotel. Leading scientists from around the world presented the scientific evidence supporting the case for incorporating copper surfaces into healthcare environments to help reduce the risk of infection and to protect public health.

28.10.2008	Hospital trial shows copper reduces contamination A study carried out at Selly Oak Hospital in Birmingham has shown that surfaces made with materials that contain copper kill a wide range of potentially harmful micro-organisms – significantly reducing the number of these organisms that can come into contact with patients, visitors and staff. The study found that, when tested, items made from copper had up to 95 per cent fewer micro-organisms on them, compared with the same items made out of standard materials such as stainless steel. 13.10.2008	Integrated Home Systems Leonardo ENERGY has launched a new online resource concerning the automation of modern homes for electrical contractors and educational bodies. 01.10.2008	First results from Copper Clinical Trial Announced Professor Tom Elliott, leader of the Copper Clinical Trial being undertaken at Selly Oak Hospital, University Hospital Birmingham, announced the forthcoming publication of the first results during his presentation as guest speaker at an event to mark the 75th anniversary of Copper Development Association at Grocers’ Hall, London on the 1st October.
01.10.2008	Copper Domestic Gas Pipe Sizing Webcast The UK Copper Board has produced another in a growing series of webcasts aimed at providing easy-to-digest training for installers and student plumbers. The new webcast shows the importance of correctly sizing copper pipework to ensure that gas appliances operate safely and effectively and includes worked examples of sizing calculations.
01.10.2008	75 Years - CDA and Copper-Nickels At an event to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Copper Development Association (CDA) in London on the 1st October, an exhibition featured the latest resources to support designers, fabricators and operators of copper alloy systems for handling seawater. These workhorse alloys have been in service since the 1930s and possess properties that are still eminently useful to modern service conditions.
