New research compares antimicrobial efficacy of copper and silver open pdf
Silver and copper have been used for their antimicrobial properties for centuries. Now, manufacturers are incorporating these metals into healthcare, food industry and even some consumer products, and making antimicrobial claims. In particular, there are several companies that create silver-ion coatings that can be applied to various surfaces, from work surfaces to door handles, which are then marketed as antimicrobial; some products claim to be effective against MRSA, a potentially deadly hospital-acquired infection. A study published in the most recent issue of Letters in Applied Microbiology answers the question of whether these applications work under real-life conditions.

In response to rising interest in and demand for hygienic copper touch surfaces, Copper Development Association has developed an international online product catalogue of uncoated antimicrobial copper and copper alloy products, and is inviting manufacturers and suppliers to submit their products for inclusion. British Scientist Shares Expertise on Swine Flu Control in Beijing open pdf
While British schoolchildren infected with swine flu were being quarantined in a local hospital, UK microbiologist, Professor Bill Keevil, shared his expertise in the control of influenza virus A (H1N1) with leading scientists from around the globe at the World Summit of Anitvirals in Beijing. Professor Keevil’s research shows that copper actively inhibits influenza A (H1N1) indicating a role for hard surfaces such as door handles to be made from copper and brass (copper combined with zinc) to help prevent the spread of infection.

Hospital trial shows copper reduces contamination open pdf
A study carried out at Selly Oak Hospital in Birmingham has shown that surfaces made with materials that contain copper kill a wide range of potentially harmful micro-organisms – significantly reducing the number of these organisms that can come into contact with patients, visitors and staff. The study found that, when tested, items made from copper had up to 95 per cent fewer micro-organisms on them, compared with the same items made out of standard materials such as stainless steel.
