A No.

Q What is the melting point of copper?

A 1083°C

Q Which Grade of copper should be used where welding is required?

A A Phosphorous deoxidised copper (C106)-this is CW 006A.

Q Will commercial grades of copper become hard (like steel) if they are cooled rapidly after heating?

A No. Copper is not susceptible to precipitation hardening.

Q Why is copper so efficient in heat exchanger applications?

A Because the thermal conductivity is so high - it is 23 x better than stainless steel or titanium and 1.6 times better than aluminum.

Q Which copper alloy has a good electrical conductivity and retains strength up to 400°C?

A Copper chromium (CC101) - conductivity is 80% IACS - strength good up to 400°C.

Q What effect does heavy cold working have on the electrical conductivity of copper?

A It reduces by about 3%.

Q I am making an item which will form part of a compressed air system on a train. The drawing calls for copper tube in grade CW004A (C101). My stockist informs me that this grade is not available in the required size but has offered CW006A (C106). Is this suitable?

A Yes. CW004A is an electrical grade of copper and in this application electrical conductivity is not an issue. CW006A is the usual grade for engineering applications and is widely used to carry water, gas and air. The mechanical properties of the two grades are the same.
