Copper and copper alloys have a long history of use for door hardware due to the ease of forming, longevity and attractive appearance of the products. Door furniture represents one of the most frequently touched surfaces in any building and so is an ideal candidate to benefit from the hygienic properties of uncoated copper and copper alloys. Copper is a broad spectrum antimicrobial which kills bacteria, fungi and viruses including MRSA, E. Coli, Clostridium difficile and Influenza A (H1N1). According to the Health Protection Agency, Swine flu can be caught 'from touching an object such as a door handle which has virus on it from someone infected with flu'', highlighting the role hard sufaces have in the spread of diease.
