1. Introduction
1.2 Symbolic Unit Abbreviations
1.3 Multiples and Sub-Multiples of SI and Metric Units
The symbolic units abbreviations, or symbols, used in the CIDEC data sheets are those recommended by the International Organisation for Standardization (ISO) and also accepted by most national standards organisations.
the following specific rules have been adopted in the compilation of this general data sheet:-
(i) the indices "2" and "3" are used as symbols for "square" and "cubic" respectively, instead of the abbreviations "sq" or "cu" which are frequently found in the technical literature
(ii) both singular and plural are indicated by the same symbol.
The conversion factors have been calculated only when they are likely to be of practical importance to the user of the data sheets for individual materials and in accordance with the following principles:-
(i) for approximate values, 8 significant figures are reported; the eighth significant figure has been rounded, in the usual way, to the next higher figure only when the ninth figure is equal to or greater than 5.
(ii) exact values are printed in bold type.
