TECHNICAL NOTE 26

Reissued March 1988

Introduction

These data sheets, prepared by the International Copper Development Council (CIDEC), were originally published in a series covering all the main coppers and copper alloys in two large loose-leaf binders during the period 1968 - 1972. They contain an invaluable summary of data relating to the physical and mechanical properties of the materials at low, ambient and elevated temperatures which is not available elsewhere. Tensile, hardness, impact, creep and fatigue data have been abstracted from the relevant original literature. For the sake of accuracy, it is presented in bold type in the units in which it was originally published, together with lighter type equivalents in corresponding units.

Due to increasing demand from engineering designers and others for this type of information in readily accessible form, the decision has been made to reprint the data sheets in conveniently bound form. This booklet provides information relating to the brasses. A second booklet covers the coppers in high conductivity copper alloys and a further booklet, to be published, will include the other main copper alloys.

As predicted in the 1968 introductory notes, there has been a gradual conversion to the use of Sl units. For stress conversions of the original data quoted, the following factors may be useful in addition to those shown in section 2.7 of the general data sheets:

To convert to N/mm2 from multiply by
hbar 10
mega pascals (MPa) 1
MN/m2 1
kgf/mm2 9.806 65
Ibf/in2 6.894 757 3 x 10-3

Since the original editorial facilities are no longer available, it has not been possible to update the information given. Generally it will be found still valid. Where subsequent information has been published, it will have been referred to in the International Copper Information Bulletin (ICIB) or other abstracts source.

For information updating the national and ISO specifications quoted for manufactured forms, refer to national standards organisations.
